Sometimes it clicks, and sometimes it doesn’t. I focus the camera and wait for a smile. It’s easy with people that I know, or with ones who are familiar with camera-toting tourists. But for other people in Myanmar, it can be more of a challenge. There are times when I have to practically beg for a smile. A happy, laughing child will suddenly freeze when asked to pose for a photo. It seems to be some sort of common practice in this country for the subject to stare at the camera, arms hanging stiffly to the side, and sport a very serious expression. But when they break out of that mould and flash a smile, it’s a beautiful sight!
